Friendship Loss & New Beginnings: How to Support Your Daughter

Feb 12, 2025

In our last blog, we talked about frenemies—how to spot red flags, step away from unhealthy friendships, and expand your social circle through new activities and opportunities.

But even when girls recognize a friendship isn’t right for them, one big challenge remains: the anxiety of reaching out to new people.

This week’s podcast dives into how you can help your daughter navigate friendship loss, rebuild confidence, and take steps toward forming new, healthy connections.

Has Your Daughter Ever Said…

💭 “She already has her group of friends—there’s no room for me.”
💭 “What if she doesn’t want to be my friend?”
💭 “No one listens when I talk.”

If these thoughts sound familiar, she’s not alone. So many girls feel this way. But here’s the truth: There is no limit on friendship.

Friendship Isn’t a Closed Circle

It’s easy to think that friend groups are set in stone—that once someone has a few close friends, there’s no space for new connections. But friendships are fluid. They grow, shift, and change over time.

If your daughter notices someone she’d like to get to know better, she shouldn’t assume that just because that person already has friends, there’s no room for her. There is always room for another kind, supportive friend.

Friendship Confidence: 4 Ways to Help Your Daughter Connect

Making new friends can feel intimidating, especially if your daughter worries about rejection or stepping outside her comfort zone. But small steps can make a big difference! Encourage her to try these:

Start small. A smile, a simple “Hey, I love your notebook!” or a comment about a shared class can open the door to conversation.

Be open. She doesn’t have to be best friends with everyone, but being friendly creates opportunities for connections.

Join in. Clubs, teams, and activities make it easier to meet people naturally without the pressure of one-on-one conversations.

Remind her: Friendship isn’t a competition. Someone else having a great friendship doesn’t take away her chance to build meaningful connections. There is enough friendship for everyone.

How You Can Support Her as a Parent

As parents, we want to help, but friendships are personal and often out of our control. Here’s what you can do:

Listen without fixing. If she shares that she feels left out or nervous, validate her feelings rather than jumping in with solutions.

Reassure her that friendships change. A group that looks closed now might not be in a few months. New friendships can bloom at any time.

Model reaching out. Show her that even as adults, we continue to meet new people, make friends, and step out of our comfort zones.
